Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September 2026 — and the headline for everyday users isn’t the benchmarks, it’s the access: Sonnet 5.5 now powers the free tier on claude.ai. Two weeks ago we covered OpenAI keeping GPT-6 Astra away from free users; Anthropic has just done the opposite.
What’s new in Claude Sonnet 5.5
- More than 30% faster output than Sonnet 5, by Anthropic’s own measure
- A startling coding jump: 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, up from Sonnet 5’s 10.3% — and ahead of the pricier Opus 5.5’s 66.4%
- Matches Opus 5.5 on knowledge benchmarks while typically using fewer tokens
- 1M-token context window and 128K max output
- Available on the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry; Haiku 5.5 is promised in the coming weeks
The detail the “30% cheaper” claim buries
Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 can cost up to 30% less — but API prices have not changed: input is still $2 and output $10 per million tokens. The saving comes from the model using fewer tokens to finish the same task, not from a rate cut. Real for API users with real workloads; not a price drop, whatever the headlines imply. For claude.ai subscribers nothing changes on price — free users simply get a much better model.
What Sonnet 5.5 means for everyday users
If you use Claude’s free plan, you now have a model that out-codes the flagship tier of a fortnight ago without paying a penny — the strongest free AI chatbot deal going as of this week. Our Claude review and Claude vs ChatGPT comparison will be updated once we’ve tested Sonnet 5.5 on our own tasks — the free-tier upgrade could shift that comparison’s value verdict, and we’ll say so if it does.
