ChatGPT vs Claude AI

ChatGPT and Claude AI are the two most capable general-purpose AI assistants available right now. Both have free plans, both handle writing and reasoning exceptionally well, and both are worth using. Who Should Choose ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is the better choice if you want the most widely-used AI assistant with the broadest ecosystem. It’s the right pick if you need image generation (GPT Image 2), access to thousands of custom GPTs, web browsing, or if you use apps that integrate with ChatGPT directly. The free plan is also more generous day-to-day for most casual users.

Who Should Choose Claude AI?

Claude AI is the better choice if you work with long documents, need nuanced and careful reasoning, or want the highest-quality prose output. Its context window — now up to 1 million tokens with Fable 5.1 — lets you feed it entire books, contracts, or research papers. Many writers and researchers prefer Claude’s tone — it feels more considered and less generic than ChatGPT at its default settings.

Our Verdict

For most people starting with AI, ChatGPT is the better first choice — broader features, more integrations, and a slightly more capable free plan. But if you write seriously, work with long documents, or want the most natural conversational AI available, Claude AI is worth using alongside it. Many power users run both.

How We Compared ChatGPT and Claude

Both assistants went through our full review process separately: signed up, used on real work, and scored on the same four criteria — ChatGPT scored 9/10 and Claude scored 9/10. This comparison distils those tests plus continued daily use of both, most recently through ChatGPT’s switch to GPT Image 2 and Claude’s Fable 5.1 release.

ChatGPT vs Claude Pricing in 2026

Both have genuinely usable free plans, which is where most people should start. At the time of writing, ChatGPT Plus costs £20/month in the UK and Claude Pro £18/month, and both companies shipped major 2026 model upgrades — GPT Image 2 and Fable 5.1 respectively — without raising those prices. Heavy users have pricier tiers on both sides (ChatGPT Pro, Claude Max), but for most people the £18–20 tier is the sensible ceiling.

ChatGPT vs Claude: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for writing?

Yes — in our testing Claude produced the best long-form writing of any mainstream assistant, and its context window (up to 1M tokens with Fable 5.1) handles whole books and long reports in one conversation. ChatGPT is the stronger all-rounder; Claude is the stronger writer.

Which is better free: ChatGPT or Claude?

ChatGPT’s free plan does more day to day: web search, image generation via GPT Image 2 and file uploads without paying. Claude’s free plan showcases its writing quality but has tighter limits and no image generation on any plan.

Should you pay for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro?

Pick by the job, not the brand. If you need images, custom GPTs and the broadest ecosystem, ChatGPT Plus at £20/month. If your work is long documents and careful prose, Claude Pro at £18/month. Both scored 9/10 in our tests; many professionals run both.
