Anthropic has released Claude Fable 5.1, the new top model in the Claude app and API, alongside a restricted sibling called Mythos 5.1. Launched on 1 September 2026, it is already live for Claude users — if you subscribe, you may have seen the in-app notice promising a model that “sticks to what you asked for” and “checks each number as it goes”. Here is what actually changed, what it costs, and what it means if you use Claude — our 9/10 top-rated AI assistant.

What Is Claude Fable 5.1?

Fable 5.1 is the successor to Fable 5, Anthropic’s flagship “Mythos-class” model that sits above the Opus tier. The headline numbers: a 1 million-token context window (up from 200k on previous Claude flagships — roughly 700,000 words of documents in one conversation) and a 128,000-token maximum output. Anthropic also cut costs, including cache-read pricing reported around 75% lower, and says the model produces fewer false-positive refusals — fewer “I can’t help with that” responses to harmless requests.

What Anthropic Is Promising App Users

The consumer pitch, straight from the in-app announcement, is reliability rather than raw power:

  • It “sticks to what you asked for and asks when it’s unclear” — less going off-script
  • It “creates finished spreadsheets and checks each number as it goes” — aimed at exactly the working-document tasks where AI errors hurt most
  • It “shows its sources and separates what’s known from what’s estimated” — a transparency claim we will be testing with interest

Max plan subscribers get Fable 5.1 included for up to 50% of their plan usage, per the in-app notice. [We will confirm tier availability across Free, Pro and Max as we test.]

Fable vs Mythos: The Two-Version Strategy

As with Fable 5, the 5.1 release comes in two forms that are the same underlying model with different safeguards. Fable 5.1 is what everyone gets. Mythos 5.1 is limited to Anthropic’s trusted-access programmes, with safeguards designed for work in cybersecurity and the life sciences. For everyday users this changes nothing — but it is why you will see two names for what is effectively one model.

Should Claude Users Care?

Yes, and you likely already have it — Anthropic rolls the new flagship into the Claude apps automatically. The 1M context window is the practical headline: whole books, long contracts or a year of reports in a single conversation, territory where Claude previously trailed Gemini. The reliability claims — checked numbers, source separation — are the ones our Claude review will retest, because “the model says it checked” and “the numbers are right” are exactly the kind of claims we don’t take on faith.

Is Claude still better than ChatGPT for writing?

Claude scored 9/10 in our testing with the best long-form writing quality of any mainstream assistant, and the 1M-token context strengthens its lead on long documents. See our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison — which we will update once we have tested 5.1 hands-on.
