Rank Math Free Review 2026: Is the Free Version Enough? (Tested on a Live Site)

Rank Math Free Review 2026: Is the Free Version Enough? (Tested on a Live Site)

⚠️ Affiliate Disclosure: This post is not an affiliate associated review. It may become one in the future and this disclosure will reflect that. This does not affect my reviews and I only recommend tools I genuinely believe in.

This Rank Math free review comes from a slightly unusual test bench: WhatAITools itself. The site you’re reading runs on the free version of Rank Math, and I use it every day to set titles, schema, sitemaps and redirects across 100-plus posts. So rather than ask whether Rank Math is good in general, this review answers the question a free user actually has: is the free version enough, and when is it worth paying for Pro?

Rank Math Free Review

Rank Math is a WordPress SEO plugin — the main alternative to Yoast — that handles the technical side of search: page titles and meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, schema markup, redirects and on-page SEO checks. It’s free on WordPress.org, with paid Pro, Business and Agency plans, and a separate paid AI suite (Content AI, AI Link Genius and AI Visibility).

Disclosure: I pay nothing for Rank Math and have no commercial relationship with it. Everything below comes from running WhatAITools on the free plan (version 1.0.280 at the time of writing), plus Rank Math’s own pricing and plan-comparison pages, checked in October 2026.

What Does Rank Math Free Actually Do?

Here’s what Rank Math’s free version is doing on WhatAITools right now — 12 modules switched on, none of them paid:

  • Titles, descriptions and focus keywords — Rank Math free sets the SEO title, meta description and focus keywords on every post, and scores each page against its on-page checks.
  • XML sitemaps — Rank Math free generates the sitemap index Google reads: on this site, 99 posts, 12 pages and 15 category archives, updated automatically as I publish.
  • Schema markup — Rank Math free adds structured data from its 18 pre-defined schema types, and stores the review schema that carries each WhatAITools score into search results.
  • Redirects — Rank Math free’s Redirections module runs 12 permanent (301) redirects here. One old review URL from the site’s early days has quietly sent 73 visitors to the right page instead of an error.
  • Search Console data — Rank Math free connects to Google Search Console and shows clicks, impressions and positions inside WordPress.
  • Webmaster verification — Rank Math free has fields for Google, Bing, Pinterest and other verification codes. I claimed WhatAITools on Pinterest by pasting one code into it.
  • Image SEO, instant indexing, internal link counts and llms.txt — Rank Math free also adds missing image alt attributes, pings IndexNow, counts internal links per post and can generate an llms.txt file for AI crawlers.

One thing I didn’t expect to matter: Rank Math also exposes its settings to AI assistants through WordPress’s abilities system. I pulled the module list, sitemap counts and redirect data for this review by asking Claude, through the Easy MCP AI plugin, rather than clicking through settings screens.

Rank Math Free vs Pro: What Do You Get by Paying?

Keyword rank tracker No 500 keywords

Sitemaps Standard XML sitemap Adds Google News and Video sitemaps
Index status tracking Limited Track Google index status per post
Bulk editing and CSV import Basic Advanced bulk edit, CSV import of SEO data and redirects
Rank Math AI Separate subscription Includes a free Rank Math AI trial

Rank Math showed me prices in euros from the UK when I checked: Pro €7.99 a month, Business €24.99 and Agency €54.99, all billed annually and excluding VAT. Business and Agency are for people managing client sites (up to 100 and 500 respectively) and raise the rank-tracking limit to 10,000 and 50,000 keywords. Content AI — the AI writing assistant behind features like “Fix with AI” — is sold separately as part of Rank Math AI, which I haven’t paid for, so this review doesn’t score it.

Rank Math Free Review: Pros & Cons

Rank Math Free Pros

  • Rank Math free covers titles, sitemaps, schema and redirects with no paywall
  • 18 schema types on the free plan, including Article, Product and Software
  • Built-in redirect manager — no separate plugin needed
  • Search Console data inside WordPress
  • Modular: switch off anything you don’t use
  • Works with AI assistants through WordPress abilities

Rank Math Free Cons

  • Rank Math free keeps nudging you towards Pro and Content AI from the dashboard
  • No keyword rank tracking without paying
  • Search Console data only refreshes every 3 days
  • Stores “&” in titles as “&”, which can leak into schema names
  • So many settings that a beginner can misconfigure things

What Are the Downsides of Rank Math Free?

The upsell is constant. Rank Math’s dashboard widget regularly promotes paid features. The post that prompted this review was a “Content AI 2.0” announcement it surfaced in October 2026 — which, when I checked, was first published in 2023 and recently refreshed. It isn’t misleading, exactly, but a free user should expect to scroll past a lot of Pro and AI promotion.

The small quirks are real. Rank Math stores an ampersand in an SEO title as the HTML entity “&”, which can end up in schema names — so on this site I write “and” in titles instead. And with a dozen modules and hundreds of settings, it’s easy to leave something on by accident. On WhatAITools, for example, Rank Math’s own llms.txt module and a separate llms.txt plugin were both switched on, and an old static file was quietly overriding both. I’ve since moved to Rank Math’s version, but it’s the kind of overlap that’s easy to miss.

Some useful tools are Pro-only. The 404 monitor, which logs broken links visitors hit, is free (I switched it on while writing this review); rank tracking, daily Search Console data, News and Video sitemaps, and a custom schema builder all need Pro.

Who Should Pay for Rank Math Pro?

Upgrade if you need one of these: keyword rank tracking without a separate tool, daily Search Console data, a News sitemap for a news publication, Video sitemaps, or custom and imported schema. Agencies managing client sites need Business or Agency for the multi-site support and higher tracking limits.

Stay on free if you run a blog, review site or small business site and mostly need titles, sitemaps, schema and redirects done properly. That’s exactly how WhatAITools runs — I track rankings in Google Search Console directly, which is free.

Is Rank Math Free Good? My Verdict

Yes — Rank Math free is good enough for most sites. I scored it 8.5/10 in my WhatAITools review, after running this site on the free version: it handles titles, sitemaps, schema and redirects properly at £0, and Pro only earns its price if you need rank tracking, daily data or specialist sitemaps.

What holds it back from a higher score is the constant push towards paid features and a handful of quirks that catch you out once you’re deep in the settings. But as a free plugin, it does far more than it needs to.

Rank Math Free Score Breakdown

Category Score Why
Output quality 9/10 Sitemaps, schema and redirects work reliably on a live site
Ease of use 7.5/10 The setup wizard helps, but the depth of settings is easy to get lost in
Features 8.5/10 More than most sites need at £0; rank tracking and advanced schema are Pro
Value for money 10/10 It’s free, and it replaces several single-purpose plugins
Overall score 8.5/10 Good enough for most sites; upgrade only for rank tracking or specialist needs
Overall score is my own judgement, not an average of the categories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rank Math free?

Yes. The core Rank Math SEO plugin is free on WordPress.org and covers titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps, schema, redirects and Search Console data. Paid Pro, Business and Agency plans add rank tracking, more schema and faster data, and Rank Math AI is a separate subscription.

Is the free version of Rank Math enough?

For most blogs, review sites and small business sites, yes. WhatAITools runs entirely on Rank Math free, and I scored it 8.5/10 in my WhatAITools review. You’d only need Pro for keyword rank tracking, daily Search Console data, News or Video sitemaps, or custom schema.

How much is Rank Math Pro?

Rank Math Pro was €7.99 a month billed annually, excluding VAT, when I checked from the UK in October 2026. Business was €24.99 and Agency €54.99 a month, also billed annually.

Does Rank Math free include schema?

Yes. Rank Math free includes 18 pre-defined schema types, including Article, Product, Software Application, Recipe, Event and Course. Pro adds a custom schema builder, 840+ types and the ability to import schema from other websites.

Is Rank Math better than Yoast?

Rank Math’s free version includes more than Yoast’s free version — notably schema types and a built-in redirect manager. I haven’t run WhatAITools on Yoast, so I can’t compare them hands-on; if you already use Yoast happily, there’s no urgent reason to switch.
